According to Forrester Research, enterprise storage requirements are set to rise by 50% each year. The need to have secure data, available 24x7 has never been greater; an issue that companies are facing on a global scale. A significant example is eupec, a 100% subsidiary of Infineon Technologies, one of the world's leading producers of power semiconductors in module and disc configuration. The company was founded in 1990 when Siemens and AEG united their power semiconductor activities. Headquartered in Warstein (Germany), eupec runs manufacturing plants and subsidiaries in Germany, Hungary, France and the USA.
Due to new requirements resulting from global expansion as well as the complex product development and production processes eupec decided to reorganize the company's existing backup solution – ARCSERVE, NTBackup and BRbackup with decentralised DLT 4000, 7000 and 8000-drives. Steady, continuous growth of the company meant its network and backup would also continue to grow. The challenges to be overcome were: Unreliable backup- and recovery features, extensive backup times, insufficient capacities and inadequately high amounts of handling and administration. The mix of differential, incremental and full backups results in a volume of about 300 GB per day and 1.2 TB on weekends.
As a result, Thomas Kortmann, IT-Administrator at eupec, was looking for a new solution. After carefully studying and testing the leading suppliers on the market, he contacted BASIS, an independent system integrator specialised in enterprise data storage systems, data management, storage virtualization, data backup and recovery with high availability solutions. BASIS teamed up with Orchestra, an ITservice company with 47 professionals specialised to deliver “more than storage” – consulting, implementation, technical support and training. The task was to implement an integrated backup solution for the whole plant and for all applications on the basis of a single backup software. The new backup solution had to be integrated in an EMC²-SAN infrastructure using a Windows 2000 server connected via fiber-based Gigabit network and additional NT4 servers. The task was to develop a robust solution with automated tape handling, an exceptional performance, high reliability and scalability and certifications for all applications involved in the process. The solution had to back up Microsoft Windows NT, HP UX and Microsoft Windows 2000 systems, along with Microsoft Exchange, SQL and Oracle databases, three SAP R/3 databases, files and all of eupec’s other applications. Hard- and software had to support a 24x7 availability – conducted completely online. The BASIS and Orchestra professionals analysed the situation and developed a concept for the design. The solution involved a central ADIC Scalar 1000 tape library with a total of 188 slots. The backup procedures – now only applied to data actually modified on the day in question – are controlled and monitored by Legato NetWorker 6.1.1. on a dedicated Windows 2000 backup server. This was linked by an ethernet connection to the existing internal network in which all operational servers are included.
The Orchestra team implemented the complex software solution in 17 working days. In parallel to the implementation the specialists set up a workshop and trained the eupec staff. The project was concluded with intensive and successful backup-, recovery- and performance tests. „24x7 availability is an ambitious goal for any backup infrastructure. Fast and seamless backups and recoveries require two things: a clever combination of hard - and software and a perfect integration of the LAN - SAN environment. In addition, the total costs of ownership are key. As eupec continues to grow our backup must be able to follow,” says Thomas Kortmann. “We are happy with the results and consider the project as a complete success.”
As a result, eupec can now rely on an integrated high-performance backup solution. BASIS and Orchestra reduced the backup time in average by 70%. In the meantime, a second expansion stage has demonstrated the high level scalability of the solution.
